Lights Out For Earth Hour

A Lincolnshire lighting business is calling for other county companies and their employees to join it in turning off their lights between 8 and 9pm on Saturday 28th March.

Procure Direct, which specialises in the manufacture and design of LED lighting solutions, has written to its customers across the private and public sector asking them to take part in next month’s Earth Hour.

Started by WWF and partners as a symbolic lights-out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment, engaging millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories. It has become a catalyst for positive environmental impact, driving major legislative changes by harnessing the power of the people.

Earth Hour aims to put the spotlight on global warming and the decline of global biodiversity and its impact on up to one million species that face extinction. As well as asking for people, businesses and famous landmarks to turn off their non-essential lighting, the WWF is also asking people to sign their support online at the Voice of Planet. The signatures will be presented to world leaders later in 2020.

“Earth Hour is an effortless thing to take part in,” says Spencer Coffin, director of Procure Direct. “Hopefully though it will once again send a clear message of concern to people in government. As a company that helps people reduce their energy usage through the installation of LED lighting and far-infrared heating, we thought we should do our bit to help Earth Hour on a local level. All of our team will be turning off their lights at home on Saturday 28th March, going for an evening stroll, dining by candlelight or possibly going on a ghost walk around Lincoln! We’ve written to all our customers and business connections asking them to support Earth Hour too.”

Established in 2005, Procure Direct designs, manufactures and installs LED lighting solutions across the private and public sector. In the last 15 years, Procure Direct has worked with a wide range of clients, including Lincolnshire County Council, NPower, Mitie, Kier and over 60 schools. Spencer says that by switching to LED lighting, its customers have saved thousands of tonnes of carbon and several million pounds in electricity bills. A Carbon Trust accredited business, Procure Direct has also committed to reducing its carbon footprint each year.
